Luke’s Gospel – Investigating The Man Who Is God

Love Mark Driscoll or hate him, you have to hand it to the man for his committment to expository preaching and detailed teaching from the Bible. Mark has embarked on a detailed sermon series from the Gospel of Luke and expects that this will take three years – you heard it – three years! And his sermons are over an hour long!

This is thoroughly refreshing in an age where many modern churches and their pastors have forgotten what it is to preach from a book of the Bible in a detailed manner, and give their congregation some real meat to chew on instead of spiritual breast milk. Mark Driscoll seems determined to single-handedly blow this common modern trend of insipid preaching right out of the water.

Listening to this kind of expository preaching is not for the faint-of-heart and should only be attempted by Christians who really want to grow their faith into maturity. Those who are happy to sit back and remain cocooned in a state of suspended Christian immaturity should stick with the less taxing 20 minute self-help sermons churned out by many preachers and pastors these days. There’s plenty to choose from.

Luke’s Gospel: Investigating the Man Who Is God
Part 1: Eyewitness to Jesus (Luke 1:1-4)

Pastor Mark Driscoll kicks off this three-year sermon series, introducing us to Luke the book (the longest in the New Testament and containing 41 unique passages found nowhere else in the Bible), Luke the author (well-educated Gentile who also wrote Acts), and Luke the man (medical doctor and humble, faithful friend to Paul). Luke’s Gospel is written to Theophilus (which means “lover of God”), and all of us who are or would be lovers of God are encouraged to follow along Luke’s meticulous investigation of the facts and eyewitness accounts concerning Jesus’ life, death, burial, and resurrection. Theophilus’ generosity to fund Luke’s expensive investigation means that today, two thousand years later, we get to read the books Luke wrote, Luke and Acts. Thus, we are encouraged to follow the sacrificial examples of humble Luke and generous Theophilus. The Jesus of the Bible will jump off the pages as we explore and investigate for ourselves the Gospel of Luke through photos, videos, and stories gathered live from Greece, Israel, and Turkey by Pastor Mark and a Mars Hill film and audio crew.
